Outbreak at Outpost 2000 - Day 3 & 4

Seeing a red blinking light from underneath the steering console, he quickly decides to retreat in fear of some sort of exploding device. A voice bellows from the bus and urges them to come aboard. The voice sounds military in cadence and protection at this point is the number one...goal, besides Cardio. Stepping aboard the bus, they see a small monitor in the back click on. A general’s face begins to tell the survivors to throw all of their belongings in one of the contamination baskets and prepare for departure. Following orders, one of the survivors begins a quiet conversation with the general who instructs him that his fellow survivors are not as they appear. He gives him percentages of their infection possibility and then instructs him to pick up his pistol and eliminate all but one. Not wanting to murder his friends in cold blood, he turns the pistol on the visual screen and unloads a couple rounds into the A/V equipment. Suddenly the bus shuts down and the mechanical steering column freezes in place. Unable to restart the bus and with the molten flesh of zombies advancing in their direction due to the noise of their exploits, they quickly grab their gear and head for the nearest grocery store.

Meanwhile, the two in the Chinese restaurant deliver the final blows to their ghoulish acquaintances but not before one of them is bitten on the neck. A ceiling tile begins to move and a beautiful woman’s face peers down at them and asks for help. Dragging the woman down who came from the Dog Grooming store next door, she quickly faints to the floor. The wounded survivor, not wanting to show his wound, covers his neck and bends down to help the damsel. Suddenly a click of a pistol echoes in the room as the woman points it directly at the survivors head. Whistling, she alerts a band of other survivors to come in through the ceiling tiles as she tells the wounded survivor “Can’t trust anyone these days can you?”

The baby lays motionless when the now armed survivor tries to turn the infant over to help. Lurching out, the baby begins to bite and gnaw at the survivor who has clearly been infected. A loud scream from the zombie child almost pierces the survivor’s ears as it summons other flesh loving Shamblers to the area. With no remorse, the survivor puts his boots to the infant, who struggles but succumbs to the hardened blows. Leaving the office quickly, he makes it out the door and quickly into the nearby Scoops Bar. That’s when he hears it again. The ever loud piecing shrill of the now deformed and flesh hanging infant follows behind the survivor, calling a mass horde to its command. Hitting his head with his fist, the survivor recalls a recent zombie movie and utters his error..”Rule #2 – Double-Tap!..Damnit!” With no retreat, he enters the bar and finds himself completely trapped and swarmed by over twenty hungry undead. Taking in his surroundings he prepares for the end when he spies what looks like a grenade in the middle of the horde as they kick it about. “It’s do or die” when he bursts into the fray and just barely makes it to the explosive device, taking multiple wounds from the ripping teeth of zombies. Falling to the ground he pulls the pin when a zombie dislodges the grenade from his grasp and rolls some twelve feet away. The explosion is deafening. Body parts fly in ever which direction as massive swaths of blood rein down over the entire bar. A fire breaks out and begins to start as the badly wounded survivor amazingly stumbles outside through two feet of dismembered bodies. Falling to his knees, he starts to feel very hot and sick. A few minutes go by and his state worsens as his eyes close completely and his last breath is breathed. “Arrrrrr!” His eyes awaken as he scans for only one thing on his mind…FOOD!”

“Join us or die” the thug survivors say to the two in the Chinese restaurant. Not wanting to face another obstacle they try to reason with the others but finally a fight breaks out as gun fire erupts, cleavers are slashed and fists fly. One survivor makes it out unscathed while the other is caught and wounded again, but this time not from the undead. Pleading for his life he convinces them to let him go. What he didn’t realize, is they confirmed their suspicions of him being infected and let him go so as not to be a danger to their own goals. Fleeing after his friend the two survivors make it out the back and to a bank of houses. Climbing a fence, they scamper to the closest house and enter. A small girl’s voice can be heard from the upper level as they begin to scavenge the area, bearing a can of SPAM, and shockingly a half spent Uzi hidden in the kitchen. Being a family man with children, one survivor ascends to the upper level towards the distressed child. Hearing the moans of rotting undead clambering at a closed closet, he rushes in to aid the now silenced child and rescue her. Almost being bit several times, he unleashes a flurry of blows with the meat cleaver. Pieces of body parts begin to drop to the floor when he hears a whistle from downstairs blow loudly. One zombie actually disengages and moves to the squealing sound when the sound of automatic fire explodes in the hallway from the other survivor’s Uzi 9mm. Eliminating all nonliving beings in the small room, the auto-firing survivor opens the closet when the little girl jumps out and attacks him full force, knocking him to the ground, biting him repeatedly. A couple final blows from the cleaver and they both fall to the floor in exhaustion. Slowly they make it downstairs and to the garage when the wounded survivor begins to shake. Beads of sweat flow from his brow as he looks at his friend. No words are exchanged as he hands all of his possessions to him along with the Uzi. Taking a bicycle he climbs aboard and peddles off, leaving his friend behind, knowing the end is near for him. The only thing he hears bellow from the now walking dead of a friend is the guttural resonating name “Booooooobbbbbbbbbb!” which quickly changes to a hungry moan.

Seeing the grocery store directly to their left they make a mad dash for the doors. Peering in, they see a old woman about to be mauled by a couple Shamblers. “Grandma!” the woman calls to the elder woman. The other survivors try to restrain her and convince her that she is a lost cause, but her willpower is too strong. She barrels in the store and tries to defend the blows and bites of ghouls. Then a wave of slow moving flesh proceeds to surround the women and overtake them in the grocery aisle. The other survivors look on and are about to leave when one spots a set of keys the woman tries in vain to wave at them. “I have the key to the safe house!” Knowing this may be their only chance they barrel in and begin to unload round after round into the heads of zombies, splattering brain matter all over the soup aisle. Grasping the key ring, they just barely make it out of the store and around to the nearby Barber shop where their other friends of their group were checking the store out for weapons of any kind. Seeing a sea of fresh blood on the front windows, they go inside. Two undead are walking about in a huge pool of blood and gnawing at what looks like their friend’s shirts which have been torn and ripped from their bodies. Bloody foot prints can be seen running out the back door and a glimmer of hope begins to muster. Taking swift action, they sidestep the slow moving flesh eaters and out the back door when the siren outside begins once again.

Through the resonating emergency siren’s blaring horn, another sound can be heard. The no mistaken sound of a semi rig’s loud horn rips through the air. Seconds later, a eighteen wheeler barrels down Northdale Boulevard, smashing into zombies on the road and intersection. Flagging the big rig down, it comes to a stop in front of the two survivors. Around the corner come the other shirtless survivors and one on a bicycle. All regroup in front of the semi when the window lowers and a double-barreled shotgun pokes out. The voice of a southern female begins negotiations with the survivors. A secret deal is struck with the truckers for one of the survivors to leave the others and command them to enter the trailer which is full of hungry undead. A double cross rats out the traitor of a survivor who informs his friends of their predicament and the semi-truck begin to drive away and with one of the survivors’ backpacks. The mood goes from glee to madness as the entire group unloads their guns at the speeding semi. Betrayal is on their list of DO NOTS and they are going to make sure it never happens again. The sound of exploding tires fills the area when the truck loses control and jackknifes into a wrecked car, flipping it over on its side. The trailer door breaks open as the survivors relish in the high pitched screams of the truckers being mauled by the feverishly hungry horde. A fire breaks out in the semi and begins to burn away, but not before a couple of items can be scavenged from the wreck.

Regrouping once again and three survivors down, they high tale it to the safe house which is an abandoned small convenience store. Using the key, they enter the dark building when they hear voices from the storage area on the lower level. Clicking their flashlights, they proceed to the stairwell and are met with wrong end of a hunting rifle. “Who are you? How did you get in here? Only my wife Melissa had the keys to this place. She was supposed to meet up here. No, its okay girls, mommy is still coming. Where is she? Where’s my wife?” The group tries to break it to the man easily but at this point, there is no easy way. Greeting the others below, the number of people grows to almost thirty survivors. Food, water and a Military Radio are among the commodities they all share. Minutes go by when one of the lookouts shouts from upstairs that they have visitors…LOTS OF THEM!

[The camera zooms away from the convenience store as zombie after zombie begin to surround the building on all sides, amassing into a swarm of hungry flesh shambling undead]

End of Chapter 1
